Aircraft Hangars in Namjeju Registered Cultural Heritage №39, built in 1937. |
These aircraft hangars were constructed by the Japanese military during
World War Ⅱ (1939-45) using the forced labor of Jeju residents. Twenty hangars were originally constructed; nineteenare preserved in their original form and the other one remains in pieces only. Despite a number of man-made caves built to establish encampments, this is the only site where so many ground facilities are concentrated. It is an historic site attesting to theJapanese military's attempt to turn Jeju into a base for making sorties. |
